The 2009 GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon

March 6-9, 2009

UAA Campus, Anchorage

Volunteer for the 25th Annual

GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon is such a rewarding way to spend a small amount of time once a year helping Alaskan students from across the state to become academically motivated. The GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon is committed to the philosophy that everyone's learning potential can be maximized through competitive challenge.

The theme of next year's event is:

Latin America

2008-2009

The teams you will be judging are made up of nine students:

  • three "A" or Honor students

  • three "B" or Scholastic students

  • three "C" or Varsity students

When you donate your time, during the State competition, as an essay grader, a speech or interview judge, or a as a test proctor, you provide an opportunity for these students to be evaluated professionally in an area they have worked all year to excel in. I know you will leave the event feeling elated with a renewed sense of today’s youth when you see Alaska’s young men and women striving to achieve their personal best.

For our volunteers this year we will provide:

  •  Speech and Interview Judges have 1½ hour training session complete with training video, open discussion and Q & A session. (The training session is held immediately prior to the time you will spend judging and is included in the time scheduled on the registration form.)

  •  Beverages and hors d'oeuvres are available at the training sessions. Essay judges receive snacks, beverages & lunch.

  •  Complete packets and materials to make your judging fun & easy.

  •  Invitation to the Awards Banquet for our cost of $26.00 per person. Tickets will be on sale at the orientation.

AREAS OF JUDGING

SPEECH    Each student will come prepared with a 3½ to 4 minute prepared speech. They are also required to give a 1½ to 2 minute impromptu speech. Three judges are needed per judging room to evaluate up to 15 speeches during one session. We need a total of 30 judges for each speech session.

INTERVIEW    The interview event is patterned after a college entrance interview setting. Three judges per judging room are needed to evaluate up to 15 interviews during one session. We need a total of 30 judges for each interview session.

ESSAY    If you have experience with grading essays, English grammar or language skills, we would love to welcome you to our essay grading team. We are looking for 10 people who can spend time during the day. Beverages, snacks and lunch are provided for essay graders.

TEST PROCTOR    Ten test proctors are needed to assist the students with the passing out and collecting tests, sharpening pencils, and test monitoring. At the Super Quiz on Saturday from 8:00AM-10:00AM, 18 test proctors are needed. (Instructions for Super Quiz proctors will take place just prior to the Super Quiz.)

If you, or someone from your organization, can give a little time for the advancement of high school students from across Alaska, please complete the registration, and please, bring a friend, spouse or neighbor to join the fun!
